Mission
Statement
Harvest Home is a nonprofit,
nondenominational, full-programmed residential home that is
Christ-centered and dedicated to meeting the needs of women in
crisis pregnancy, regardless of race, religion, or nationality.
The purpose of Harvest Home is to provide love and care to each
woman, offering a stable environment where her physical,
emotional, and spiritual needs can be met. The ultimate goal is
that each woman will leave the home spiritually strong, with a
new-found sense of self worth, and better prepared to support
and care for herself and her child.
Harvest Home was founded in 1985 as
a small, two-bedroom apartment, with three pregnant women. By
the end of one year, 24 women and 26 babies had been housed or
given assistance by Harvest Home. Because of the increasing
demand for shelter care for pregnant women who might otherwise
be at risk for homelessness, it became readily apparent that
Harvest Home needed to expand. In January of 1986, the small
apartment was replaced by a condominium, and Harvest Home opened
its doors to five women and their babies. Harvest Home sought
to expand the program by adding capacity to serve more women and
by developing more in-depth services to address the variety and
complexity of the resident’s needs. In order to increase the
number of women served, Trinity Baptist Church offered to lease
a large, residential home in Venice to Harvest Home for $1 per
year. The first residents arrived at the new property on
December 5th, 1988.
Since it’s
inception, more than 350 women have called Harvest Home their
home. Harvest Home is the only maternity home serving the West
Los Angeles and Santa Monica communities. It can accommodate 9
residents with an average resident stay of 6 to 12 months.
Harvest Home works with approximately 130 social service
agencies and fields over 460 calls per year from
prospective residents and referring
agencies.
Over 400 individuals, 25 churches, 6
foundations and 4 corporations have participated and supported
the work that is being done at Harvest Home. However, we do not
measure the effectiveness of our outreach merely by the numbers
or women that have been sheltered during
a time of crisis. Rather, our success is also measured
by the women’s emotional and spiritual healing, physical and
economic well being, newly developed life skills and renewed
hope for the future.
